Formula BMW is a global open wheel racing series sponsored by BMW. The class was created in 2001 to serve as a young driver feeder and evaluation series for
higher levels of open wheel motorsports, with drivers from Asia, Europe, North America, and the UK meeting in a world final at the end of each year. Formula BMW runs with sealed
BMW in-line 4-cylinder 1171cc motorcycle engine with approximately 140 hp driving a six-speed sequential gearbox. All components of the car are strictly controlled, including
the Mygale chassis, tires, fuel, body, wings, and engine. Only adjustment of the gear ratios, wings, suspension, and brake balance are allowed. The formula creates a fast combination
for up-and-coming young drivers to compete and show their talent in capable but equal machinery. Testament to Formula BMW's success as a feeder series is Nico Rosberg's
and Sebastian Vettel's ascension from German Formula BMW champions to current Formula 1 drivers.
