Sights and Sounds from the track edge at the Baltimore Grand Prix 2011 - Indy Lights, ALMS, USF2000, IndyCar (22:42)
Indy Lights was founded in 1986 as an open wheel feeder series for young driving talent intent on racing professionally in CART / IRL / IndyCar series.
Originally named the American Racing Series, it was renamed in 1991 to Indy Lights. In the 1990's Indy Lights faced significant competition as a feeder series from the Toyota Formula Atlantic
series which had produced tremendous drivers over the years. Indy Lights races are held in the morning before each IndyCar event, giving new drivers the chance to
race on the same tracks as the big boys and girls. Indy Lights do not run at Indianapolis, however. Many top level CART / IRL / IndyCar drivers were successful in Indy Lights, including
Marco Andretti, Sam Hornish Jr., Oriol Servia, Tony Kanaan, Bryan Herta, J.R. Hildebrand and Paul Tracy. Indy Lights teams currently run a standard Dallara carbon composite chassis with normally aspirated V8
producing 420 hp, and Firestone Firehawk racing tires.
